November 2018

Emerson, our Regional Team Leader in Latin America, recently returned from Mozambique with some really encouraging stories from a Gospel movement there that is transforming lives and communities. During a recent outreach, 240 people indicated they wanted to be baptized, but the only available water for baptisms during the dry season was in a few remaining pools in a dried-up riverbed. The problem was that these pools were inhabited by crocodiles and hippos. When one of the local women courageously volunteered to clear the pool of branches and debris, she was tragically killed by a crocodile! The shocked community was then forced to walk twenty kilometers to the next closest pool for the baptism. On the way, they passed through several villages where curious locals asked where they were going. After explaining baptism to them, they invited the onlookers to join them. The crowd grew with each village until over 800 people arrived at the pool. The Gospel was preached, testimonies shared and over 600 people declared their faith in Jesus and received baptism that day! One courageous woman gave her life, not realizing that over 400 more people would hear the Gospel and receive Christ.

Our choices to serve Christ and live on mission with him each day, regardless of where we are or what we do, will bear fruit. The secret to multiplication is denying ourselves, taking up our cross and following Christ, whether it’s into a baptismal pool, a coffee shop or an office lunch room. “Unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains a single seed, but if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24). Who wants to multiply?

LIVING FREE

Physical slavery is prevalent around the world; it takes many forms. Individuals and people groups are in bondage. Guest speaker, Randy Friesen has seen the amazing power of the Gospel to bring freedom to the oppressed. In our own lives, we can find ourselves enslaved – to sin and to fear. How can we be free? Knowing who we are in Christ is vital to our freedom.
