April 2018

This past weekend, I was with our Latin America MB conference of churches in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Joanna Chapa traveled back from her long-term mission assignment in Peru to join us for the weekend. Over eighty years ago, Joanna’s grandmother, Lupita Gutierrez, was one of the first to respond to the preaching ministry of Harry and Sarah Neufeld. Like the story of Timothy, whose grandmother Lois and mother Eunice nurtured his faith journey (2 Timothy 1:5), Joanna was raised in a home and church community where discipleship and mission were highly valued. During her years at Tabor College, Joanna led numerous mission teams and then later she served as a short-term mission mobilizer for MB Mission in the Midwest. Two years ago, Joanna joined Stacy Kuhns in a discipleship ministry with a number of churches in Northern Peru.

In April 2017, a devastating El Niño season of flooding swept through Northern Peru, leaving thousands without shelter, water or food. Joanna and Stacy rallied many others, including our North American churches to respond compassionately. Together they brought clean water and food supplies by boat to hundreds of church members stranded on a hill surrounded by flood waters. We celebrated God’s faithfulness and the resilience and courage of these young women in the face of a natural disaster.

Like the resilient mission pioneers who endured scorching heat and desert conditions to bring the Gospel to the Rio Grande Valley eighty years ago, this valley is now sending resilient workers to the ends of the earth with the love of Christ. It takes resilience to live on mission in least-reached places. Pray with us that God will continue to raise up these kind of harvesters in this generation!

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for God to raise up and send us seasoned, resilient harvest workers with a calling to the least reached areas of the globe.
  • Pray for our churches, that they would continue to be places where discipleship and mission are valued and fostered, and that good fruit would be the result.
  • Please pray for our missionaries serving in areas that are closed to the Gospel, and where the ground is hard. Pray for the Holy Spirit's encouragement and perseverance.

Physical slavery is prevalent around the world; it takes many forms. Individuals and people groups are in bondage. Guest speaker, Randy Friesen has seen the amazing power of the Gospel to bring freedom to the oppressed. In our own lives, we can find ourselves enslaved – to sin and to fear. How can we be free? Knowing who we are in Christ is vital to our freedom.
