Ministry of Reconciliation

When we open our hearts to forgive, we also open windows where God wants to pour His blessings into our lives. That’s what a friend and neighbor of Otto and Lidia Funk , missionaries serving with MB Mission in Lima, Peru learned when she obeyed God’s voice and extended grace to her estranged husband.

A single mother to a handicapped seven year old son, Teresa* carries a heavy load, especially in Peru. Her son was becoming exceedingly difficult to work with and she was having trouble sleeping at night. One evening she lay in bed wide awake, and as midnight rolled around she had a strong sense that she should call her ex-husband and make things right between them.

Teresa wrestled with God. So many things seemed illogical about calling her husband to apologize. The separation was his fault, after all – he had even admitted as much. Furthermore, calling him in the middle of the night would likely result in nothing more than a sharp reprimand for waking him up! Midnight became 2am, and finally Teresa’s hand reached for the telephone receiver. As expected, she was greeted with a sleepy “hello.”

Teresa began with an explanation: “This might sound strange, but I want you to know that I forgive you for what you did. I want to ask your forgiveness for my part in the problems that we had.” Deafening silence ensued. Finally he responded in a broken voice: “You have no idea what this means to me. It has been robbing me of my happiness ever since we separated.”

Teresa and her ex-husband extended forgiveness to one another, relieving the burden they both carried on their hearts for a long time. The strangest part, Teresa told the Funks as she relayed the story, has been the change in her son. He has no knowledge of this conversation, but in the two weeks since that night his disposition has changed. His face bears a grin that stretches from ear to ear the whole day long!

As Teresa let go of her hurt, God lifted a heavy stone from her heart which He has since been showering with His peace and freedom. May God give her the courage to walk in continued obedience and reconcile other relationships in her life.

The Next Level: God’s prompting to reconcile with her ex-husband might have seemed illogical at the time, but Teresa didn’t let it stop her from obeying the voice of the Father. Is there someone that God wants you to extend forgiveness to?

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. – 2 Corinthians 5:18
