Crying out to God

“God, if you are real, then I want to get to know you, and I ask you to please get me out of here.”

This was what Bernhard cried out to God as he hung from the side of a mountain, completely exhausted. His whole life had been focused on drinking, women, mountain climbing, and doing whatever made him happy. Recently, Bernhard had been haunted by the question of what would happen after he died because he had lost some friends in a couple of accidents.

Now Bernhard was in a critical situation. He had been climbing a mountain and was over 600 metres from the ground. He had finally reached a resting area and was hanging from the side of the mountain. Bernhard called out to God for help. He couldn’t go back down and he felt too tired to keep climbing.

Although he felt like he had no energy left in his body, Bernhard had no other choice but to continue going up the mountain. After three and a half exhausting days, Bernhard reached the top of the mountain. He was tired and had lost some weight, but he had survived and he never forgot his cry to God from the side of the mountain.

At first Bernhard struggled with his new faith and felt very insecure. He thought that God would condemn him because he didn’t attend a Catholic church, take the sacraments, or go to confession anymore.

But Jesus freed him from believing these lies and gave him a new identity as a son of God. Now Bernhard is a leader in the Gmunden MB Church in Austria and his purpose in life is found in Jesus Christ. Pray that many more people in Austria will discover purpose and meaning in their lives as they cry out to God and choose to trust in Jesus.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” – Psalm 40:1-3
